This piece is a collaboration between me and my father, Brian Byrnes.
A concerto featuring my dad on chromatic harmonica, Chroma was originally performed by the San Francisco Sinfonietta in 2011. This is the studio realization of the piece, with most of the instruments of the orchestra recorded individually (often by the performers themselves at their home studios).
I started composing the piece in 2010, and as a starting point for inspiration, I used a melody that had come to my dad in a fever dream a few months prior. He also improvised the chromatic harmonica solo in the middle section.
This recording project began shortly after the premiere of the piece, but the original recording sessions were lost and the project was abandoned. Fortunately, almost 10 years later, I found the lost recordings. With my family’s help, I decided to hire more musicians and finish the recording as a birthday gift to my father for his 70th birthday. His performance was recorded last summer, and the production is now finally finished.

This is the sound that I hear in my head and search for.. I loved this whole album. Bright synthesizers, smooth synthesizers, chiptune synths, and Buddhist bells 🔔 Desert Island Rain started to feel like an old Jean Michel Jarre song at one point. I really can’t pick a favorite yet, there all so good! I look forward to listening to all the music Sevish creates. 100% recommended!
