I paint a self portrait to take a look through your eyes crystallize sonnets with every breath of your life I know we’ve both been sifting through future memories making my world change from clear lines to dreams beyond me facing my love’s gaze clear eyed, i love our mystery we breathe the same night air lament when morning arrives we walk through sun and shadows and share the glint in our eyes I know we’re searching I know we’re merging I know we’re burning in I know we’re bursting making my world change from clear lines to dreams beyond me facing my love’s gaze clear eyed, i love our mystery seeing now the world through our eyes, evermore making my world change from clear lines to dreams beyond me facing my love’s gaze clear eyed, i love our mystery

Falling Man 02:53
when you see the long road end sky high those receding loopholes cinch tight in your hindsight throw it out cold break it down low through the sky you scream alone terrified it would happen anyway rectified by streets below simplified by the gravity of suicide of your fate when you feel the heat blow past blind eyes peace is out the window the height of a lifetime throw it out cold break it down low through the sky you scream alone terrified it would happen anyway breathe one last time we’d do the same witness cries that we are you, next to fall yeah we’re all with you your suicide is the least of you dignified it would happen anyway through the sky you don’t scream alone, we are with you

Semantics 04:12
delirium feels fine with memories long gone you say that we’re always on fire and never have you ever been wrong it feels mysterious a feeling that we’re not always truthful I’m feeling furious scribbling the writing on the wall it’s feeling serious feeling that we might have gone too far i think this is a foretold story this is familiar territory believing you is my tedium full blown rips in the fabricated lines light obliterates the shadows it feels mysterious a feeling that we’re not always truthful I’m feeling furious scribbling the writing on the wall it’s feeling serious feeling that we might have gone too far i think this is a foretold story it’s familiar territory it feels mysterious a feeling that we’re not always truthful I’m feeling furious scribbling the writing on the wall it’s feeling serious feeling that we might have gone too far i think this is a foretold story

Droner 04:34
when all the pessimism doesn’t show the hindered mannerisms smolder below vying unknown a quiet mysticism calling out through all the cynicism kindling doubt blinding and cold I’ve lost my way now, I’m sold I brace for rain high above blue skies a taste of pain and I’m so tongue tied overpowered and suggestible these lurid principles are believable, blinding and cold when all the pessimism doesn’t show these hindered mannerisms smolder below vying unknown I’ve lost my way now, I’m sold I brace for rain high above blue skies I’ve lost the way through the storm goodbye

Lacuna 04:09
yes I get it I’d sleep through the world will I let it smother the urge to cry out with pessimism lay off and let the music die it’s in my way now I have a say now I’ll let it play out you wanna know what I’m saying through all the words from paradise I never know what I’m bringing in this place of cold, selfish sighs every word is not worth hanging onto with patience or prying eyes yes I get it, speak from the heart I’m just shaking, and weak from the start overloaded with nobody’s thoughts spinning with hearts anesthetized it’s in my way now I have a say now I’ll let it play out you wanna know what I’m saying through all the words from paradise every word is not worth hanging onto with patience or prying eyes I never know what I’m bringing in this place of cold, selfish sighs you wanna know what I’m saying through all the words from paradise

you talk me off the ledge with crumbling views outside you know my mind so well inside it's like you live in here slowly wade out in the water closely stay next to your father, oh let go the pain we're only water slowly sink, begin to wander slow so blue reach out to wash in I'm too far out, I should be rescuing you still time you'd fill your lungs with air just try I'll never leave you still time let go, the pain, it's only water slowly sink, begin to wander so blue reach out and wash in

Melt 04:20
we lay at the edge of the ocean the city rewinds a space that's all ours we play under shimmering stars and you're all that I can believe in this world a state of perpetual wonder life oscillates the space is all ours the pace of a rolling blue wave and you're all that I can believe in this world, spinning me round and round know you are everything that makes it all matter I'll hold your heart and find a way for things to get better grow through fire and let the rain fix everything later close your eyes, and let the doubt melt away forever erase all the worry that racks you the beat of your heart the pace is all ours I see all my dreams through your eyes and you're all that I can believe in this world, spinning me round and round round and round... know you are everything that makes it all matter I'll hold your heart and find a way for things to get better grow through fire and let the rain fix everything later and let the doubt melt away forever

Wishbone 03:50
sailing through the quiet careening alone shoot into the high space above spill out through crushing gears stay awake, stay awake fade away, fade away clutching to stunning fear fade away, fade away stay awake, stay awake seat belt keeps on fighting a game of wishbone bursting from the highway above spill out through crushing gears stay awake, stay awake fade away, fade away clutching to stunning fear fade away, fade away stay awake, stay awake spill out through crushing gears clutching to stunning fear

about

All tracks performed, produced, engineered, and mixed by Brendan Byrnes.

Mastered by Daniel Eaton at Little Castle Mastering.

Artwork by Michael Day.

Byrnes’ 4th microtonal solo album continues his exploration of xenharmonic tuning systems within a rock and pop framework, using mostly 22 EDO but also employing 27 EDO, 15 EDO, and 12 EDO. The driving force on the album is the vocals, swarmed by microtonal electric guitars and colorful synths creating thick, intricate textures punctured by kinetic rhythms. There are echoes of ILEVENS and past solo albums here, but Realism leans more into accessible, singable pop territory. Not every song is overtly microtonal; some tracks highlight the more consonant resources in the chosen tuning systems, allowing the more xenharmonic moments to jump out in contrast.

Special thanks to Metatonal Music for the 22 EDO guitars and bass, and to H-Pi Instruments for making it possible to re-tune synthesizers to microtonal tunings.

Extra special thanks and love to Bekah Brandes and my family and friends.

Thank you very much for listening and for the support!
